Yellow wedding flowers are such an underrated choice. It’s the happiest colour, the colour of sunshine, warmth and celebration. Yellow makes you smile, brings a little sunshine into the room and has such a playful, fun energy. I’ve always had a soft spot for yellow flowers, and I’d love to see more couples embracing them for their wedding day.
From soft butter yellow and fresh lemon to bold canary yellow, there are so many ways to incorporate yellow wedding flowers into your day. You can keep things light and chic with ivory and white, go full summer-party with orange, or create a playful colour combination with bubblegum pink.
And the best part? There are so many beautiful yellow flowers available to florists throughout the year in New Zealand, so you have plenty of options to explore.
If you’re planning yellow wedding flowers in NZ, here’s a guide to the shades, seasonal flowers and colour combinations worth considering.

What shades of yellow can you use for wedding flowers?
Yellow isn’t just one colour. From delicate, creamy tones to bright, sunshine yellow, choosing your shade can completely change the look and feel of your wedding flowers.
Lemon yellow
Fresh, bright and zesty, lemon yellow has a crisp, modern feel. It’s beautiful paired with white, ivory and soft butter yellow for a chic, fresh palette.
Butter yellow
Soft, creamy and warm, butter yellow is a gorgeous option for couples who love a more subtle take on yellow. It has a romantic, elegant feel without losing that lovely warmth.
Canary yellow
Bold, bright and full of personality, canary yellow is pure sunshine. It’s playful, joyful and perfect for couples who want their wedding flowers to make a statement.
You can also mix different shades of yellow together. Lemon, butter and canary can all work beautifully in the same design, especially when the flowers have a variety of shapes and textures.

Yellow roses for wedding flowers
Yellow roses are a lovely choice for yellow wedding flowers, and there are some beautiful varieties available to florists.
NZ-grown varieties include:
- ‘Sansa’
- ‘Camouflage’
- ‘Yelloween’
- As well as yellow spray roses
Imported varieties include:
- ‘Giselle’
- ‘Brighton’
Rose varieties can differ in shade, head size and availability, so if you have your heart set on a particular yellow rose, it’s worth discussing it with your florist early.
A special mention: ‘Bartzella’ tree peony
If I had to choose a standout yellow flower, ‘Bartzella’ tree peony would be right up there. It’s a spectacular flower, with that beautiful peony shape and a gorgeous yellow colour. As a massive Simpsons fan, I sometimes wonder if the name came was inspired by our favourite yellow family?
Peonies are always a special choice for wedding flowers, and a yellow variety is such a lovely way to do something a little different.

What about yellow frangipanis?
Frangipanis, also known as plumeria, are such stunning flowers. Their sunny yellow and white colouring has a beautiful tropical feel, and it’s easy to see why couples might want them for their wedding flowers.
Unfortunately, frangipanis aren’t sold as cut flowers in New Zealand. They do grow here, but the local climate and conditions aren’t ideal for them to flourish as a commercial cut flower, and imported stems don’t survive well.
So if you were planning on using frangipanis for your wedding flowers in NZ, I’m sorry to say they aren’t a practical option.
If you love that tropical look, chat with your florist about other flowers that could help create a similar feeling.

Yellow wedding flower colour combinations
Yellow is such a versatile colour, and there are lots of ways to style it. These are three combinations I especially love.
Yellow and orange: summer party vibes
Yellow and orange together are pure summer-party energy. Bright, warm and full of fun, this combination feels like sunshine, good times and a celebration.
You can go bold with canary yellow and vibrant orange, or bring in softer shades for a more relaxed, summery look.
Lemon, butter, ivory and white: so chic
For a softer, more elegant take on yellow wedding flowers, combine lemon and butter yellow with ivory and white.
This palette feels fresh, light and sophisticated. The different shades of yellow add warmth and interest, while the ivory and white keep everything feeling clean and refined.
It’s a beautiful option for couples who want colour without going too bold.
Lemon and bubblegum pink: playful and cute
Yellow and pink together are such a fun combination. Lemon yellow brings that fresh sunshine feeling, while bubblegum pink adds a playful pop of colour.
This palette is sweet, joyful and full of personality, especially when you mix different flower shapes and textures.

Can yellow wedding flowers look elegant and modern?
For sure. Yellow doesn’t have to mean rustic, country-style or overly casual.
The shade you choose, the flowers you use and the way they’re arranged all influence the final look. Soft butter yellow with ivory and white can feel chic and understated, while clean shapes and a more structured design can give brighter yellow flowers a contemporary edge.
Yellow can be playful and fun, but it can also be polished and sophisticated.
Are yellow wedding flowers available all year round in NZ?
There are yellow flowers available to florists across different times of the year in New Zealand, but individual varieties have their own seasons.
For example, daffodils are a classic spring flower, while other yellow flowers may be available at different times depending on local growing conditions, imports and supplier availability.
If you have a particular flower in mind, your florist can help you work out if it’s a realistic option for your wedding date.

What yellow flowers are best for a bridal bouquet?
There’s no single answer, because it depends on the style of bouquet you love.
Sunflowers are a brilliant choice for a bold, playful look. Roses, ranunculus and lisianthus can create a softer, more romantic feel. Calla lilies and yellow iris are great options for something more sculptural and modern.
If you love yellow but aren’t sure which flowers to choose, start with the overall look you want. Your florist can help select suitable flowers and shades for your wedding date.

Frequently asked questions about yellow wedding flowers
What do yellow wedding flowers symbolise?
Yellow flowers are often associated with happiness, warmth, joy and friendship. They’re a lovely choice for a wedding because they bring such a cheerful, celebratory feeling to the day.
Flower symbolism can vary between cultures and traditions, but yellow’s sunny, joyful character is part of what makes it such a fun wedding colour.
Are sunflowers suitable for wedding bouquets?
Yes! Sunflowers can be a gorgeous choice for wedding bouquets, especially if you love a bold, playful or summery look.
Their large flower heads make a statement, so your florist can help balance their scale with the other flowers and the overall shape of your bouquet.

Yes, there may be yellow flower options for a winter wedding, but the exact varieties available will depend on your date and supplier availability.

What is the best yellow flower for a wedding?
That’s a very personal question! Sunflowers take my top spot for their happy, sunshine-filled personality, while daffodils get my silver medal.
