Wedding Flowers in October NZ

Wedding flowers in October NZ are where spring really starts to show off. The days are getting longer, colour palettes feel lighter and brighter, and some absolute fan favourites begin to make their appearance. October weddings have that fresh, romantic, slightly whimsical energy, with a beautiful mix of delicate blooms and statement flowers.

Here are our top flower picks for October weddings and why we love working with them.

Peonies (Mid – Late October – Coral Charm)

Yes, you read that right. Late October is when we start to see the very first peonies appear, and Coral Charm is usually the star of the show. And sometimes if Mother Nature is in a good mood, we’ll see the first few on their season mid-October.

These beauties open from a vibrant coral into softer peachy tones and then fade into buttery cream. They’re lush, romantic and highly sought-after, so if peonies are on your wish list, early planning is essential. If your heart is set on another colour then you’ll need to plan for a November wedding instead. All other varieties are slower to bloom, and are unlikely to be around in October.

Ranunculus

If there’s one flower that screams spring romance, it’s ranunculus. Their soft, layered petals and beautiful colour range make them a go-to for October weddings.

You’ll find ranunculus in shades like white, blush, peach and deep burgundy. They’re incredibly versatile and look stunning in bridal bouquets, bridesmaid posies and table arrangements.

Ranunculus pair beautifully with anemones, sweet peas and roses, and they’re perfect for couples wanting a romantic, airy look that still feels lush.

Anemones

Anemones are a huge favourite of mine, especially for spring weddings. Their soft petals and dark centres create a striking contrast that photographs beautifully. They have a delicate, romantic feel with just enough edge to keep things interesting.

Anemones look stunning in bridal bouquets, especially when mixed with ranunculus, sweet peas or roses. But I dare you to have them on their own in an amazing pavé! They also work beautifully in table arrangements and ceremony installations, adding a soft, fluttery texture that feels very “October”.

Sweet Peas

Sweet peas are one of those flowers that feel truly special. Their fragrance is so stunning it makes me want to dive in and live in the petals forever! They’re dainty, beautifully scented and full of movement.

Their delicate ruffled petals bring softness and a gentle flow to bouquets and arrangements. Sweet peas are ideal for couples wanting an airy, romantic style and pair perfectly with ranunculus, anemones and roses. Especially gorgeous in pastel palettes.

Tulips

Tulips are sleek, elegant and available in an incredible range of colours, from soft blush and white through to deep plum, vibrant orange and moody purple.

They work beautifully in both modern, minimal designs and relaxed garden-style bouquets. Tulips also look amazing en masse, for ceremony arrangements or long table installations where you want impact without things feeling overworked.

Freesias

Freesias are another spring classic and a lovely addition to October wedding flowers. They’re known for their beautiful fragrance and clean, elegant shape.

Available in white, red, orange, yellow, pinks and purple, freesias slot easily into all colour palettes. They’re great for bouquets, buttonholes and table arrangements, and add a subtle scent that guests always notice.

Gypsophila (Baby’s Breath)

Baby’s breath has had a serious glow-up and we are here for it. When used well, gypsophila looks soft, airy and cloud-like.

Brides are loving it on its own for modern, minimal bouquets or big fluffy installations, as well as mixed through designs with roses, ranunculus and sweet peas. It also looks beautiful in flower crowns, aisle arrangements and statement hanging installations.

Poppies

Poppies bring a whimsical, slightly wild energy that feels perfect for October weddings. Their delicate paper-thin petals and striking centres make them feel special and a little unexpected.

They’re stunning in loose, garden-style bouquets and pair beautifully with sweet peas, ranunculus and tulips. Usually bunched and sold in assorted colours, so if you’re happy for a vibrant mix then this flower is for you.

Roses

Roses are available year-round and remain a staple for October weddings. Garden roses are full, soft and romantic, while spray roses add texture and detail with their smaller clustered blooms.

With colours ranging from creamy ivory and blush through to peach, red and fuchsia, there’s a rose for every palette. Roses anchor designs beautifully and help give arrangements fullness.

Phalaenopsis Orchids

Phalaenopsis orchids instantly say ‘chic’ in floral design. They feel modern, luxe and somewhat dramatic in the best way.

They’re considered one of the more premium flowers in New Zealand and most are imported, so advance ordering is important. Available in white, blush and fuchsia (often delicately dyed), they work beautifully in cascading bouquets, modern arrangements and statement installations.
