August is when winter starts to soften and little hints of spring begin to show. Itâs a gorgeous transitional month for weddings in New Zealand. You still get all the richness and texture of winter florals, but with early spring blooms peeking through. With crisp tulips, sculptural orchids, and the delicious scent of freesias and hyacinth drifting through your venue. Here are our favourite wedding flowers in August and why we love designing with them.
Cymbidium Orchids
Cymbidiums continue to shine right through August, and honestly, theyâre one of our most-used winter wedding flowers for good reason. These orchids are bold, elegant and incredibly long-lasting, the type of flower that looks perfect from the moment we design your bouquet until long after the reception ends. They grow like crazy in New Zealand, so the abundance should be embraced if you’re getting married in August!
Their colours are absolute heaven for wedding palettes: white, pink, burgundy, golden honey, soft green – basically every romantic winter shade you could imagine. If you want something luxurious without being too âtraditional,â cymbidiums are a stunning choice and reasonably priced.
Tulips
Tulips are going strong in August, and theyâre often even better quality as we move closer to spring. Youâll find everything from pure white to deep berry tones and soft pastels. Tulips bring a really fresh, uplifting energy to winter bouquets, the kind of flower that instantly brightens the whole aesthetic.
They look beautiful arranged simply on their own, or mixed into fuller, more textured bouquets with orchids and roses. We love their movement too – tulips naturally curve and stretch over time, which gives bouquets that effortless, organic feel brides adore.
Hyacinth
Hyacinth is one of those flowers people fall in love with the second they smell it. The fragrance is soft, sweet and instantly âspringy,â making it such a gorgeous addition to August weddings.
Theyâre not a flower we typically use as the main event, but they add lovely texture and volume in mixed bouquets, especially when paired with freesias or blown open roses. Colours range from crisp white to pale pinks and purples – perfect for couples wanting a floral scent that gently carries throughout the day.
Freesias
Speak of the devils – freesias are another beautifully fragrant option in August. Their delicate, arching stems and soft ruffled petals make bouquets feel whimsical and romantic.
Freesias also come in heaps of colours, from snow white to vibrant citrus tones and mauvey hues. Theyâre one of the best choices for brides wanting a lighter, garden-inspired bouquet that still feels delicate and elegant for winter.

Roses
Roses are always reliable in August, and the cooler weather gives them that crisp, structured look brides love. This month is ideal for neutral palettes like soft ivory, cream, champagne, sandy toffee and dusky mauve tones. These colours blend so beautifully with the darker, richer tones we see in cymbidiums and winter foliage.
Spray roses are especially nice at this time of year too because they add fullness and detail without feeling heavy or overstyled. And yes, theyâre a classic, but honestly theyâre a staple for a reason. We use them in almost every wedding.
Winter Foliage & Textural Elements
Winter foliage is still absolutely thriving in August. Manuka, Hypocalymma, Erica and riceflower all add that soft, wild texture that elevates bouquets from simple to stunning. Theyâre beautiful mixed with orchids or roses, offering movement, volume and a natural âNew Zealand winterâ vibe.
Proteas are available too, and when we can source them, they add that bold, sculptural element which works so nicely in modern or rustic winter weddings. The white and king protea varieties are more on the pricey side, but totally worth it.
Dried flowers also continue to be a favourite this month. Blended lightly with fresh seasonal flowers, they add warmth, softness and a look that feels both wintery and romantic.
