Peonies

Peonies are typically in season during late spring to early summer, which means they bloom from October to December. The exact timing can vary slightly depending on weather conditions. Early-blooming peony varieties in New Zealand include 'Coral Charm' and 'Coral Sunset' with their stunning coral-pink hues, followed by 'Red Charm' with its burgundy double blooms, and then 'Sarah Bernhardt' which is a gorgeous bubblegum pink with fluffy petals. The white varieties are the last to bloom.

Peonies grow best in New Zealand's cooler regions, such as the South Island and parts of the lower North Island, where they thrive in well-drained soil and full sun.

While it's possible for peonies to be grown in Auckland, the warmer and more humid climate can make it challenging for them to produce consistent blooms. Choose a peony variety that are more tolerant of warmer climates, plant them in a spot with good air circulation and at least 6 hours of sun, and ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot. Also consider planting them in a slightly raised bed to improve drainage and keep them cooler during the hotter months. Tipping icy water mimics cooler conditions and can slow down the blooming process, helping the peonies thrive and last longer. Watering them early in the morning or late in the evening with cool or icy water can provide relief from the heat and prevent stress on the plants.

Peonies open quickly due to their natural response to temperature and hydration, as warmer conditions and sufficient water trigger their blooming process.

Place them in cool, fresh water, change the water daily, trim the stems at an angle, and keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
