Your Frequently Asked Questions About Orchids!

When are orchids in season?

Cymbidium orchids are typically in season from May and running through to October (mid-autumn to early spring). This is when they’re at peak flush, and we see thousands of stems sold through the flower auctions during this time.

Why are orchids expensive?

Orchids are high-end due to their slow growth, specific care requirements, and limited growing conditions. It can take years for an orchid plant to mature and produce flowers, and they need carefully controlled environments to thrive. Cymbidium orchids are grown in specialised greenhouses in New Zealand, making them more costly to cultivate. Their exotic beauty, long-lasting nature, and association with luxury also contribute to their status as a premium flower.

How can you make an orchid bouquet last longer?

To keep your Cymbidium orchid bouquet fresh, make sure to trim the stems at an angle every couple days and place them in clean water. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Refresh the water every two days, and remove any wilting blooms to maintain the bouquet’s overall look.

Can you preserve an orchid bouquet?

Yes, you can! You can dry them by hanging the orchids upside down in a cool, dry place with good airflow for a few weeks. Our go-to space is a garage, garden shed or airing cupboard where there’s a hot water cylinder. Alternatively, you can press individual blooms between the pages of a heavy book to preserve their beauty in a flat form. These techniques also work for Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium (AKA Singapore Orchids) and Vanda Orchids.
