Hydrangeas for Wedding Flowers NZ: Quick Answer
Hydrangeas have become one of the most popular wedding flowers in New Zealand, and it’s easy to see why. Their large, cloud-like flower heads create instant impact, whether they’re tucked into a bridal bouquet, arranged en masse down a ceremony aisle, or cascading dramatically from a floral installation.
Available in beautiful shades of white, blue, pink, purple and antiqued green, hydrangeas are incredibly versatile and suit everything from romantic garden weddings to elegant cathedral ceremonies and modern celebrations.
As an Auckland wedding florist, I’d happily put hydrangeas in my top three wedding flowers. They’re bold, timeless and effortlessly chic.
Hydrangeas Aren’t Your Grandmother’s Flower
Well… not anymore. Hydrangeas have made a huge comeback over the last few years, and this time, I honestly think they’re here to stay.
Once thought of as a traditional garden flower, hydrangeas have become one of the most in-demand flowers for weddings. And I completely understand why.
Hydrangeas have big attitude and big presence. They’re confident, full, fluffy and almost cloud-like. They’re a statement.
Dress them up? Easy. Want to dress them down? That can be done too. In fact, bridesmaids have been known to walk down the aisle carrying a single hydrangea stem. How many flowers are capable of handling that task? Not too many. But hydrangeas understood the assignment.
Why Couples Love Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas create impact instantly.
Because each stem is so full, they naturally create that luxurious, abundant look without needing dozens of flowers.

One of my absolute favourite ways to use hydrangeas is in cascading arrangements.

Unlike peonies or roses, florists don’t usually buy hydrangeas by variety name.
Instead, they’re generally sold by colour.

What Does “Antiqued” Hydrangea Mean?
One of the questions I get asked quite a bit is what “antiqued” actually means.
An antiqued hydrangea is simply a flower that’s matured on the plant.
Instead of bright, fresh colouring, the petals develop softer, muted tones with beautiful hints of other colours running through them. They’re incredibly elegant.
One interesting thing about New Zealand-grown hydrangeas is that our green hydrangeas are almost always antiqued green.
That means you’ll notice touches of pink, burgundy or dusty rose throughout the petals.
Believe it or not, we don’t really have access to a simple emerald green hydrangea here. There will almost always be a little hint of something else going on. Personally, think they’re even prettier.
When Are Hydrangeas in Season in New Zealand?
Hydrangeas have a wonderfully long season.
December to March
White hydrangeas are at their best.
This is when you’ll find those huge, luxurious flower heads that have become a wedding favourite.
Summer through to May
Soft pinks, hot pinks, purples, blues and antiqued green hydrangeas continue well into autumn.
One thing you’ll notice is that as the season progresses, the flower heads naturally become a little smaller.
White Hydrangeas: The Wedding Favourite
If your heart is set on white hydrangeas, it’s well worth mentioning them to your florist early. They’re one of the most in-demand wedding flowers every single summer.
Because demand is so high, they’re also the most expensive hydrangea colour. They’re absolutely worth it.
Masses of white hydrangeas scream good taste. They’re timeless. Elegant. And effortlessly chic.
A Florist’s Secret: Hydrangeas Love Water
Hydrangeas have a bit of a reputation…
They’re thirsty. Very thirsty.
But they also have a little superpower.
Unlike many flowers, hydrangeas can absorb water through their petals as well as their stems.
If I have a thirsty hydrangea in the studio, one of the quickest ways to freshen it up is to plunge the flower head into a bucket of clean water.
Give it a good dunk. It might look dramatic, but it works. Then give the stem a fresh cut, pop it back into water, and more often than not it’ll perk up beautifully.
They weren’t named Hydrangea for nothing.
One thing I also love about antiqued hydrangeas is how forgiving they are. They last beautifully and dry exceptionally well, making them a lovely keepsake after your wedding.
